TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The author of the passage believes that a four day workweek would improve the lives of individual employees because, it gives them more free time to improve the quality of their personal life by spending more time with their families, nurturing their hobbies and or enjoying leisure activities. Also, author mentions that it would be beneficial to company as well. The lecture on the other hand, posits that a four day workweek is not at all beneficial to company nor to individual employees.

First of all author points out that diminished workweek would rise the company profit. To substantiate this argument, he states that reduced workweek gives employees more time to relax as a result they are more alert and they are less prone to errors. Since, four day employees are paid 80 percent of normal salary company can hire more staff which reduces the workload of individual employees without rising the cost for hiring new workers. However, the lecture contradicts the idea because hiring new workers would require training programs. Also, company needs more additional space and computer facilities. In addition to this company has to offer medical health benefits to newly hired which would cost huge amount to the company

Second, article states that this new plan would reduce the overall unemployment of the country. But, lecture contradicts this idea this idea. Because, a four day workweek would result in more available jobs. Companies might cut down cost on new hires because of above mentioned reasons. As a result their expectation on existing employees will increase. Due to this, a four day worker might have to do as much work as five day worker in order to meet company;'s expectation. This might lead to unavailability of jobs.

Finally, article claims that four day workweek would improve the personal life of employees by allowing them to spend good amount of time with their loved ones. Also, they can chase their hobbies and enjoy free time activities. Lecture on the other hand, opposes this idea because more free time may give rise to career risk. Because, company prefers five day workers and it would more likely to fire four day workers if company's economy is at stake. Also, company would prefer five day workers for promotion because their availability is more compared to four day workers. Hence, considering these factors lecture claims that more free time would reduce the quality of life.

In summary, the points made by lecture contradicts with the reading. Professor successfully demonstrates that diminished workdays would reduce the quality of life of individuals and this is not good for comapany as well.
