TPO 05 As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high.

both the reading passage and the lecture tries to determine the utility of the great chaco canyon settlements in new mexico. The reading passage aims to provide plausible reasons and supports them with the evidence which the author thinks is sufficient to back his claims. The lecture however casts doubts on each of these theories exposing the holes in each one of them.

To begin with, the reading passage starts with the first theory put forward by the archeologists, that the chaco houses might have been used for purely residential purposes. The author mentions that, the archeologists think each of the houses had 100’s of people in them. The also attribute the great chaco houses as a predecessor to the famed apartment buildings at Taos, new mexico. however, the lecture douses all these claims with a very sound question. if they were used for fire places, where are the fire places that are required to cook food or to even keep the families warm? The lecture agrees that from the outside, these settlements might pass off as houses, but on deeper inspection they fail to justify the claim. if it housed 100’s of families, they had to cook to eat. but these settlements had very few fireplaces. even the largest one’s only had around 10 fireplaces which is very meagre when considering the amount of families, it could house. Thus, the first theory was discarded.

The second theory put forward in the reading passage suggests that, these settlements could have been structures used to store food crops like maize. maize was one of the main crops grown by the chaco people, and it could potentially be stored for a long amount of time without getting spoilt. The size of the house indicated their aptness for this purpose. however, the lecture provides ample reasons to discard this theory as well. The lecture points out the absence of any traces of maize or maize containers in these houses. Had these structures been used as a storehouse, there would have been some fossilized traces of the crop or container used to store them. Thence, the second theory could also be ruled out.

The third and final theory put forward by the author is that, these settlements could have been centers for religious activities or ceremonies. The passage leans on some broken pots found in a mound close to one of the houses. The broken pots were found to have meal remains and assumed to be remains of the food consumed by the people after a religious activity or even a festive meat. however, the lecture provides evidence that discredits this theory as well. The lecture points out that along with the broken pots, there were remains of construction materials like sand or building tools. this implies that the pots could simply have been containers used by the construction workers and the meal remains, leftovers from the food they consumed. this discredits the theory of any ceremonial gathering and rather attributes it to a mere temporary presence during the constructional activity.

In light of all these arguments from both the passage and the lecture, it could be safely assumed that the true utility of the chaco settlements are yet to be discovered.
