TPO-06 - Integrated Writing Task Communal online encyclopedias represent one of the latest resources to be found on the Internet. They are in many respects like traditional printed encyclopedias collections of articles on various subjects. What is specifi

The author of the reading passage is of the opinion that even though the communal online encyclopedias are similar to traditional printed encyclopedias they are not that accurate. The online encyclopedia may offer variety of articles and information but it has a lot of problems associated with it.In contrast, the lecturer believes that, the communal online encyclopedias cannot be perfect but it has a lot of benefits over the traditional encyclopedia.

Firstly, the passage states that, anyone, from untrained personnel to unqualified people, can make changes to articles online. But the traditional encyclopedia is written by trained professionals. The lecturer counters this, by pointing out a fact that, errors in the traditional encyclopedias tend to remain unchecked for years and there is nothing one can do about it. The information is permanent and will remains so.The online encyclopedias, on the other hand, can be corrected by and is flexible and it offers a wide range of flexibility.

Secondly, the passage argues that, online encyclopedia aren't that secure, as hackers can easily tamper with information and they may even delete or change the facts. Whereas, traditional encyclopedias are relatively safe. The lecturer refutes this argument by stating that, online encyclopedias have seen growth in its form of security and has made changes. Read only format has been added to prevent hackers from accessing the information. He further states that, older people have been kept in-charge, to keep an eye on the articles and report any changes made to it.

Finally, the passage posits that communal encyclopedias give unnecessary importance to trivial facts than the traditional encyclopedia. It relates the historical article being as long as an entire TV series. It also says that, traditional media is more segregated and proportionate in comparison. The lecturer, however, is of a different opinion. He states that the online encyclopedia provides a vast space for including articles when compared to traditional one which includes limited space and unimportant information, that the user might find useless. The lecturer further mentions that the articles are diverse with clarity and accuracy.

To sum up, the lecturer feels that online encyclopedia is better than traditional encyclopedia as is provides accurate, secure and diverse information which can be updated from time to time. Thus, he contradicts the given passage.
