TPO 07- In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this certification can attract customers by advertising their products as ecocertified. Around the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in order to receive ecocertification. However, it is unlikely that wood companies in the United States will do the same, for several reasons.

The reading and lecture are both about certification of ecological wood products. The author of the reading believes that in the United States wood manufacturers will not follow wood certification for three reasons. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that his arguments are inaccurate compared to facts.

First of all, the author points out that American consumers don't mind the eco certification label. The author states that they do not trust the claims made by the advertising claims. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that companies make their own products checked and inspected by independent certifying agency. Furthermore, he argues that consumers trust and have confidence to the claims and certification of this independent agency.

Secondly, the author contends that certified wood products would become expensive compared to uncertified wood. The articles denotes that prices will increase and companies want their prices to be low for consumers to still support their products. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that consumers are price conscious. Moreover, he elaborates on this by mentioning that if the eco wood certified product is 5% higher that uncertified wood products, then consumers will chose the certified wood because they are more concerned in preserving the environment.

Finally, the author states that wood certification would make a lot of profit if they will sell their products globally. The author establishes that american wood companies only sell locally, thus, certification is not needed. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that consumers are interested in eco certified wood products. He puts forth the idea that consumers wants to purchase products that are certified, but local companies have few merchandise in the United states. In addition, foreign companies will get customers here in the US because local company cannot keep up with the demand of certified wood products.
