TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c

The reading states that the explanation for the reduction of the sea otter is the pollution theory and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecture explains that the pollution thesis is weakened and the best interpretation for this case is the predation theory and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading claims that the chemical remains in the ocean's water could be the cause for these creatures to die and decrease in numbers. However, the lecturer counters this point by saying that there were no dead bodies on the coast to support the pollution assumption. So the predators would be more logic explanation.
Secondly, the article mentions that the decrease of other species like seals and sea lions asserts the pollution hypothesis since that would affect the whole animals. However, the professor opposes this point by mentioning that predators like orca whales could attack these animals because of the declination of her normal preys.
Thirdly, the reading states that the different level of pollution could explain the different pattern in sea otter declination. While the professor rejects this claim by saying that the uneven pattern is more likely to confirm the predation theory. She clarifies that the region that has more groups of these animals where the water is shallow and the predators due to their large size could not reach to coast to feed on sea otter.
