TPO-11 - Integrated Writing Task
A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature, novels, plays, and poems, than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself. While there has been a decline in book reading generally, the decline has been especially sharp for literature. This is unfortunate because nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. Literature encourages us to exercise our imaginations, empathize with others, and expand our understanding of language. So by reading less literature, the reading public is missing out on important benefits.
Unfortunately, missing out on the benefits of literature is not the only problem. What are people reading instead? Consider the prevalence of self-help books on lists of best sellers. These are usually superficial poorly written, and intellectually undemanding. Additionally, instead of sitting down with a challenging novel, many persons are now more likely to turn on the television, watch a music video, or read a Web page. Clearly, diverting time previously spent in reading literature to trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the level of culture in general.
The trend of reading less literature is all the more regrettable because it is taking place during a period when good literature is being written. There are many talented writers today, but theylack an audience. This fact is bound to lead publishers to invest less in literature and so support fewer serious writers. Thus, the writing as well as the reading of literature is likely to decline because of the poor standards of today's readers.

The reading and the lecture are both about effect of today's people reading literature books less, which the author states that more trendy nowadays. The author of the reading believes there are downsides for this trend. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. she is of the opinion that it has not gotten that bad.
First of all, the author suggests that book reading, especially literature and novel reading has been declined. it is mentioned that literature and novels help to increase our imagination and improve our language. so reading less affects these developments badly. The argument is refuted by the lecturer. she says literature is not the only book kind to improve such qualities. Furthermore, she argues that science, history, political, and many other genres of books also can improve one's such characteristics, and also they are often written with high quality.
Secondly, the article posits that self-help books are prevailing, and they are written poorly. The article notes that people are spending their to watch tv shows, listen musics, and read a web page. As a result, these things lowered the quality of culture. The lecturer, however, rebut this by asserting that good movies and musics are helpful to cultural demands. she elaborates on this by mentioning that such forms of entertainments speak directly to people than books do.
Finally, it is stated that the reading less trend occur during the time of good writing and that's quite unfortunate. The article establishes that lack of audiences lead to invest less to literature. so literature has a high probability of declining. The lecturer, however, opposes that nowadays' literature books are difficult. Thus, it is authors' fault. she puts forth the idea that literature from the previous generations were not that difficult as today's literature.
