TPO 15

The lecturer completely refuets the reading passage. The speakers uses three points to indicate that non of the solutions which are given in the article is effective to stop the spread of cane toad in Australia.

First, althogh a fence was successful to stop rabbits spread back on the begining of twentieth century, the fence would not stop cane toads from spreading. This is because young toad and eggs usually found in rivers stream and they could cross the fence to new areas and establish new habbitates. This facts shows that building a national fence would unlikely stop cane toads spreading.

Second, even thogh cane toads can be easily captured and destroyed by volunteers, other species might be destroyed as well. The professors mentions that there are many endangered frog species live alongside with cane toads and they look similart to each others. Thus, untrained volunteers might hunt and destroy young frog instead of cane toads. This would cause other unwanted problem to the environment.

Finally, it is true that researchers have developed virus that targets cane toads reproductive system, but it will infect other reptiles that usually get transfered to Central and South America. These repltiles will transmit the virus to the cane toads in both Americas where native cane toads live. This soultion is not parctical because it will destroy one of important species in Americas.
