The reading and the listening both are about human activities lead to decrease bird population. The author believes that expanding population and their needs effect the nature, therefore decrease in number of birds. He provided three causes to support his answer. However, the lecturer challenges the statement made by the writer. He is of opinion that there is no uniform decrease in the bird population.
First of all, the author claims that many natural habitats of animals are destroyed by the human actions, big buildings, offices all cover the maximum space. On the other hand, the lecturer rejects the reason by asserting that urban growth provides better and large niche for the birds. He says that number of animals are increased in the city areas and small birds are attacked by the huge animals.
Secondly, the author suggests that increase in human population is the reason of expanded agriculture. Because of that, the bird nests are diminished in the rural areas. On the flip side, the lecturer rebuts the claim by mentioning that in these days, less land is used for the agriculture in the united states. In fact, there is the discovery of varieties of seeds which gives the high production even in the small area of the land.
In the last it is stated that use of pesticides makes the situation even worse, some of the birds directly effected by drinking contaminated water and others indirectly by decrease in the reproduction ability. While, the lecturer refuses the reason, he says that now people are more aware of toxic side-effects of the traditional pesticides, so they discover the new crops which are resistant to the insects and pests so there is no need to use such pesticides. In t his way, this point also contradicts the passage.
