Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline for several reasons.
First, the increased use of ethanol fuel would not help tosolve one of the biggest environmental problems caused by gasoline use: global warming. Like gasoline, ethanol releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when it is burned for fuel and carbon dioxide is greenhouse gas: it helps trap heat in the atmosphere. Thus, ethanol offers no environmental advantage over gasoline.
Second, the production of significant amounts of ethanol would dramatically reduce the amount of plants available for uses other fuel. For example, much of the corn now grown in the United States is used to feed farm animals such as cows and chickens. It is estimated that if ethanol were used to satisfy just 10 percent of the fuel needs in the United States, more than 60 percent of the corn currently grown in the united stated would have to be used to produce ethanol. If most of the corn were used to produce ethanol, a substantial source of food for animals would disappear.
Third, ethanol fuel will never be able to compete with gasoline on price. Although the prices of ethanol and gasoline for the consumer are currently about the same, this is only because of the help in the form of tax subsidies given to ethanol producers by the United States government. These tax subsidies have cost the United States government over $11 billion in the past 30 years. If the United States government were to stop helping producers in this way, the price of ethanol would increase greatly.
The reading and the lecture are both about of using Ethanol instead of gasoline for fuel usage. It states that based on the view of some critics, Ethanol its not a good replacement for ethanol for several reasons. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that Ethanol is a good alternative for replacing gasoline for the several counterpoints he made against the article.
First of all, the author points out that global warming is one of the biggest consequences of using gasoline, so ethanol not gonna change this big environmental issue. It is mentioned that Ethanol and gasoline both release carbon dioxide through burning and therefore the carbon dioxide will trap in the atmosphere. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says the use of Ethanol will not add any carbon dioxide to the global warming. Ethanol will release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but also it is the source of carbon dioxide usage of some plants like corn. Furthermore, she argues corn is a plant that produces ethanol, so it will counteract the amount of carbon dioxide to be released on the air by consuming this chemical composition that produces by ethanol, and it will do not have any effect on global warming.
Secondly, the author contends that the production of ethanol fuel will reduce a significant amount of plants. The article notes animals like cows and chickens feed on corn, so using corn to produce ethanol leads to a disappear of animal foods. The lecturer rebuts this argument. she suggests cellunone is part of plants that not be eaten by animals. she elaborates on this by mentioning that Cellunone can be used to produce ethanol, and since its a part of plants that not feed the animals, it can use for the production of ethanol.
Finally, the author states that ethanol is an expensive fuel and it cannot compete with the price of gasoline. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that ethanol can be cheaper if it is bought by people. She puts forth the idea that people will increase the demand for producing ethanol, so it leads to more production of this material. As a result, by producing more ethanol, the price will reduce by three times that it is now.
