Yellow cedar is a type of trees which grow more in northwestern North America. This kind of trees has been decreasing since about 1880. There are some hypotheses which explain the reasons for this phenomenon.
First hypothesis mentions that insect parasites, especially the cedar bark beetle may be the cause of yellow cedar abatement. This beetle eats timber of trees and they can be a candidate for yellow cedar decline. Although, the professor says that yellow cedar is one of the most powerful trees and it has some special chemicals that protect from beetle attack. Also, these beetles attack trees which are injured or die so it can not be a logical reason.
Second hypothesis is that brown bears can decrease the number of trees. they sometimes attack trees because of their barks which is so sweet. Although this can not be a sufficient reason for trees decline but these bears may weaken trees until the number of them decreases. As the professor mentions, there is trees decline in the island which does not have any bear so this reason can not be logical too.
Third hypothesis attributes that the climate change may be the sufficient reason. In northwestern North America, the temperature pattern has changed in daily and seasonal scheme in the recent century. these alterations affect the root of trees. The surface root of trees starts growing in the late winter although it should be in early of spring. As a consequence, the sensitive roots of yellow cedar trees will suffer from cold air in winter nights. The frozen root may damage the health of trees and eventually kill them. On the other hand, the professor says that the number of trees which are in lower altitude is decreasing too. In low attitudes, the weather is warmer so climate change can not be a good reason for yellow cedar trees.
