The reading and the lecture discuss the population declining of the yellow cedar –a species of tree in northwestern North America- which has been steady since more than a century ago. The author believes that there some hypotheses to explain this decline. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that the causes of the declining are not still known and that the author’s hypotheses are not adequate.
First, the author comes up with the idea that one cause could be the cedar bark beetle, an insect parasite because it has been seen attacking yellow cedars. However, the lecturer argues that the yellow cedars are much more resistant than the other trees and also this kind of tree release a poisonous chemical which can sick the beetle, so the beetle could not have eaten lots of yellow trees because it would have died before ate the tree.
Second, the author states that another cause could be the brown bears which could have appreciated this kind of tree because of its sugar content and although it is not probable that this bear has destroyed trees, it could damage some with its feeding habits. The professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that the bears are from the Mainland, so the trees could not have been affected that much because they also were native of the ILand. Therefore, how those bears could have reduced the yellow cedar population if they did not live there.
Finally, the author contends that the climate changes and the partial freezing on cold winter nights that came out could decrease the cedar’s population because its roots systems were sensitive. The professor, on the other hand, posits that the yellow trees have decreased either in low elevation or high elevation. And indeed, this tree has died more in a lower elevation than in a higher. So, it is not accurate to say that the yellow cedar trees were reduced by the changes in the climate.
