In this set of materials, both the author of the reading and the lecturer discuss if the clays found in an excavation conducted by archeologists in Iran were used as electric batteries. The author suggests that they were not batteries and gives three reasons of rejection. However, the professor finds the reasons made in the article unconvincing.
According to the reading, some conductor materials such as metal wire are needed in order to produce an electric current. Since there is no evidence found about these kinds of conductors, the clays would not have been used as an electric battery. The lecturer, on the other hand, points out that these clays were found by local people who are not educated on archeology. She believes that the clays might have been overlooked or thrown. They probably might have not been recognized by locals.
The article also contends that the copper cylinders inside the clays were likely used for the same purpose of the copper cylinders found in the ruins of Seleucia that was holding the scrolls. The speaker, on the contrary, claims that when they used with iron rods together, they can produce electric energy. She also says that there might be one purpose of these cylinders but then they might be adopted for another purpose.
Lastly, the passage contends that there were not any devices working with electricity so these batteries would have been useless. The professor rebuts this by explaining that people might use electric shocks in order to convince others that they had magical features. She also adds that in ancient times, medical scholars would used electric for stimulating muscles or treating some diseases.
