As it was stated in the reading passage, the author believed that the Little ice age, which was a period of unusual cold temperature in many parts of the world, happened due to some reasons. On the contrary the lecturer finds the reasons out of date and unpersuasive and repudiates them all by providing some counter arguments.

Initially, the author brought up the idea that disruption of ocean currents could have been the reason of the ice age. However, the lecturer is thoroughly doubtful about the reliability of this idea as he points out that the Gulf Stream would have affect the Europe and North America. But the temperature decline happened in southern hemisphere as well. So the Gulf Stream and ocean current cannot account for the ice age.

Another emphasized point in the reading was that the volcanic eruption could have caused the Little ice age. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this one too by asserting that a large enough eruption might cause a large dust cloud that can prevent sunlight and lower the temperature. But this kind of large eruption would have a visual effect, like gray snow, but there are no reports of such visual anomalies. So the volcanic eruption could not have been large enough to produce huge clouds.

As the last point, the author drew attention to the fact that substantial decreases in human population may lead to less cutting of forest trees and thus cause a temperature decline. Yet again, the lecturer considers this idea invalid as well by stating that the decrease in human population happened for a short period of time and the population grew back in no time and the forests were cut down again for attaining lands. So there was not enough time for forests to become so large to affect the climate.
