TPO 29-Integrated writing

Both the author of the reading and the lecturer argue if the edmontosaur, one of the most common dinosaur, would migrate in harsh winters in order to survive. Whereas the author claims that the edmontosaur would migrate to warmer climates and gives three reasons of support, the professor finds these reasons unconvincing and rejects each of them with solid pieces of evidence.

The first evidence of the claim made in the article is the diet of the edmontosaur. According to the reading, the edmontosaur would virtually eat plants however, it would be impossible for plants to grow such a long severe winter so, the edmontosaurs might migrate to warmer climates. On the other hand, the professor states that they did not have to migrate since summer seasons were warmer at that period and, 24-hour daylights created suitable conditions for plants to grow. Moreover, the edmontosaur could eat death of the plants during winter.

It is also contended in the article that the edmontosaur would live and move in herds like many modern animals such as buffalo or caribou. This means that they lived in herds so that they could find their destination easily. The speaker, on the contrary, points out that living in herds does not mean they would migrate. She explains that living in herds provides animals extra protection against predators. For example, the elk, a large plant-eating animal, live in herds but does not migrate.

According to the passage, the edmontosaurs were capable of migrating extreme long distances so, they might use this ability to reach far destinations. The professor posits this point by saying that there were also many juveniles, which could not migrate such a long distance, in herds. They could not catch the herd and never reach the destination alone. If adults would have left them, they could not survive.
