The speaker challenges the statements made by the author. She indicates that the reason mentioned in the reading are not convincible.
First of all, the author of the reading asserts that the technology of the Greeks was not improved to make such device. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that Greeks could made the burning mirror by single sheet of copper. She explains that due to an experiment, Greeks could make large mirror by dozens of polished flat shape, and also they knew that collect the small parabolic shapes together.
Secondly, the writer of the passage declares that it would take a long time to set the ships on fire by burning mirror, he added that it is impossible that Roman ships stay unmoving until that time. This argument challenged by the speaker. She is of the opinion that Greeks used some other material instead of wood, in order to produce fire quickly. She established an experiment that showed that Greeks used water prove and picked swiftly, thereby, the fire produced within a second and spreaded.
Finally, it is mentioned in the reading that Greeks do not need of improvement the burning mirror, since they have flaming arrows. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that Roman soldiers were familiar with the flaming arrows, but they did not know about burning mirror. She puts forth the idea that the mirror was seems like a bright thing far away, but near to the ships produced fire, and it was astonishing for Romans.
