Tpo 33

The reading passage proposes some theories associated with the probable purpose and meaning of some carved, round shaped, and decorated stones that are found in scotland. The lecture, however, casts doubt on proposed ideas and offer some counterclaims to refute them all.

First, the reading argues that stones might have been used as wepones in fighting or hunting since there are hole in some of them and also grooves on their surfaces. In contrast, the professor is of the idea that they could not have been weapon for there is no sign of damage on them. Indeed, having been well preserved indicates that they did not used to be used in fighting or hunting.

Next, the passage mentions that all of the stones are of the same size and standard in shape; therefore, they could have been units of weight in their mesurement system. Conversely, the speaker brings up the fact that dispite being of the same size and shape, the stones are different in weight due to their mass which is related to the diverse kinds of stones of which they had been made. She also mentions it is crystal clear that save volum of different density results in different mass which illustrate why they had not been weight units.

Finally, the pasage states that the stones may have served as social marks owing to their elaborate disigns. On the contrary, the lecturer dismisses the issue due to a couple of facts. On the on hand, some of designs are too simple to be considered as social signs. On the other hand, they social signs would be buried down with the owner; however, no one of these stones were found in a tumb or near a human body.
