TPO 35 Integrated ٌWriting

In 1912 a bookseller named Wilfrid M. Voynich acquired a beautifully illustrated handwritten book (manuscript) written on vellum

The reading passage discusses three possible theories for the origin of the Voynich manuscript. The lecturer disagrees with all three theories and refute them one by one.

First, the lecturer does not believe Anthony Ascham is the writer of Voynich manuscript. because the manuscript was written in special code, it does not fit into Anthony Ascham's background as a common physician. In Anthony Ascham's book A little Herbal, he only wrote about plants that were well-known then. With his knowledge set, Anthony Ascham should not be able to write a book with such elaborate codes as in voynich manuscript. even though the many plant illustration in Voynich manuscript do look close to Ascham's book, it is still unlike that Acham wrote the manuscript.

Second, the lecturer thinks Edward Kelley did not write the manuscript either. because judging from how good of care the creator took of the book, the texts were real codes meant to delivery some meanings. while people from 16th century were easy to fool, Edward had no need to put in this much work just to fool people.

Last, the lecturer argues that Wilfrid himself could not be the writer either. because by using dating technology it is confirmed that the vellum and ink used to create Voynich manuscript are both over 400 years old, while Wilfrid lived in 20th century. even he could use vellum of the same age from somewhere else, he would not have access to ink around that time. So this indicates the manuscript has to be created centuries before Wilfrid obtained it.
