Some people suggest that this problem can be solved through an invention called a turtle excluder device (TED) that is incorporated into the nets. A TED provides a passage through which the turtles can escape. However, TEDs have been criticized for several reasons.

The lecture and the passage discuss whether using TED is an effective way to eradicate the threat of nets for sea turtle species or not. The reading states that using TED has not positive results. Whereas, the professor in the lecture declares that it is an efficient manner for decreasing turtle casualties.
First, the passage expresses that trapping turtles seldom occurs and escaping shrimps through TED drastically decrease their profit. However, the lecture disagrees with that and believes that there are about a thousand ships in coasts and if each ship catches a turtle monthly, They totally catch thousands of turtles every year. Moreover, for turtles' population that is small, these casualties are considerable and make a big problem for them. Therefore, in our investigate, it is essential to consider all boats that yearly catch turtles, not only a bot that monthly catches a turtle.
Second, the reading suggests that there are some more effective ways than TED, like enforcing shrimp boats to keep their nets underwater only a short time. Although the professor argues against that by saying that it is impossible to enforce all boats to do that. Because the likelihood of monitoring all boats that are far from coasts is close to zero. Also, it is easier to enforce those boats to use TED in their nets. It is accessible by checking shrimp boats before they leave the coast.
Finally, the passage mentions that using TED is not functional in some cases that the size of turtles is large. While, the lecturer retorts this notion and points out that the design of TED could change according to its function. Hence, the people designing TED could modify the size of the passage that turtles escape and make it appropriate for large ones.
Although the passage brings three reasons to say that TED is a reliable manner to reduce the turtle casualties, the lecturer makes a reasonable argument to rebut it and demonstrate that TED is an effective way
