TPO 39

The reading discusses the different possible explanations of the mass-extinction that happened at the end of the Triassic period. It provides three theories. The professor however, states that although the theories mentioned might sound plausible, none of them is a good explanation of the mass-extinction. She refutes all the theories and explains reason of her opposition.

First, the author claims that the decline of sea level could be the reason of extinction of ocean populations that lived in the shallows and the land species lived on the coast. However, the professor posits that animals are capable of adapting to environmental changes that happen gradually over a long time period. She states that it's true that there was fluctuation in the sea levels but it is not a good explanation since it happened over a long time period and not sudden enough to cause animals to disappear.

Second, the article asserts that the climate cooling that happened as a result of the Sulfur dioxide from volcanic activities might be the explanation of this phenomenon. On the other hand, the professor disputes this theory. She mentions that although it's true that Sulfur dioxde causes some climate cooling but this doesn't last long enough to cause animals to extinct. As she explains that the excess Sulfur dioxide will be eliminated from the atmosphere by combining to water and falling down on the earth with the rain.

Third, the reading provided another theory which states that an asteroid strike is a possible explanation. Conversely, the professor doesn't agree with this either. She mentions that many scientist don't agree with this theory since no asteroid crator that matches the period of extinction has been found. Although there is one crator that has been detected, but after being studied, it showed that it must have happened many years before the extinction. So obviously it has nothing to do with the extinction of these animals.
