TPO-45

The reading lists out three hypotheses to doubt a theory which supported the possibility of the existence of bees before 200-million-year ago because of the discovery of old fossil structures that resemble bee nest. However, in the speaking, the speaker strongly disagrees with the points from the reading. There are three reasons she mentioned.
Firstly, even though the lack of fossils of actual bees until 100-million-years ago was real, the speaker argues that bees still existed possibly 200 million years ago. Based on the speaker's words, bee's bodies needed to be preserved by liquid from some unique species of trees. Since these kinds of trees was not common before 100-million-years ago, bee's bodies hardly became fossils. Therefore, the speaker thinks this evidence from the reading is not convincing enough.
Secondly, the reading mentions that the later appearance of flowering plants than the old fossils proved that bees could not exist before 200 million years ago. Nevertheless, the speaker contends that since bees in the past might live on other species of plants. Until the flowering plants showed up, bees evolved to adapt to them and gradually became stable. Therefore, the speaker asserts that it is still possible that the bees appeared earlier than flowering plants.
Lastly, the reading points out the fossilized structure found in Arizona lacked some parts of modern bees' nests, for example, the caps which exist in the chambers of bees' nests. Nevertheless, the speaker provides strong evidence to prove the similarity between bees nests and the fossilized structures. It is that bees would build their nest with some chemical material to prevent the nests from getting wet, the fossilized chambers, however, includes similar water-proof material.
In sum, the speaker provides three pieces of evidence to contend with the hypotheses mentioned in the reading.
