The reading passage and the lecture both are about the possibility of the existence of bees 200 million years ago. The reading passage believes that the fossil structures that resemble bee nests and found in Arizona State were not created by bees. The lecturer casts doubt on the reasons mentioned in the reading passage and she states that they are unconvincing.
Firstly, the reading passage states that there is no fossil of actual bees from 200 million years ago. The earliest fossil remains of bees are 100 million years old not 200 years old. This point of view is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the lack of fossil of bees is due to the lack of sticky materials in trees; because bees can just be preserved in this sticky material that did not create 200 million years ago in trees. Therefore, fossils of bees could not be preserved until now.
Secondly, the reading passage says that the flowering plants did not exist 200 million years ago. Hence, because of the biological relation between bees and the flowering plants, bees could not exist before the advent of the flowering plants. However, the lecturer argues that bees were feeding on the non-flowering plants during the evolutionary period. After the advent of flowering plants 125 million years ago, bees became adapted to the flowering plants and then have remained stable until now.
Finally, the reading passage claims that the fossilized structures found in Arizona lack some of finer details that suggest the fossilized structures were made by other insects. In contrast, the lecturer refutes this point. She believes that scientist analyze the fossils by chemical materials and they found that the materials exist in the fossils are the same as the sticky and waterproof materials that exist in the modern bee nests.
