TPO-46 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which informa

The reading passage and the lecture both are about the storing patients’ medical records. The reading passage believes that the electronic version of storing patients’ medical records has some advantageous over the paper-based storing records. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the reasons mentioned in the passage by providing three outstanding reasons.

Firstly, the author states that the use of electronic records has less cost than the use of paper-based records. Indeed, electronic records need less space and they are accessible from anywhere. The lecturer refutes this point. She argues that doctors keep paper records as emergency backup besides the electronic versions; because they may lose one day.

Secondly, the reading passage says that the electronic records diminish the human errors which may occur due to illegible handwriting or so on for patients’ health. In contrast, the lecturer challenges this reason. She believes that even by storing records in electronic version, doctors need to write notes to examine their patients and they still use paper; then, someone else transformed these notes to the electronic version. Hence, there is still the possibility of human errors such as poor handwriting or the low-quality of the paper.

Finally, the reading material claims that researchers can utilize the electronic records for data mining and use the patients’ information, easily. On the other hand, the lecturer rejects this point of view. She says that these data are difficult to access for researchers; because they have privacy laws. It means that researchers have to follow privacy laws and obtain permission from the government and also the patients in order to access their data. Therefore, this would not guarantee the usefulness of storing electronic records.
