In term of whether the humpback whales which migrate long distances, navigating by the stars the article and the lecture contradict each other. The author in the article asserts that these creatures using stars for managing their ways, on the other hand, the professor in the lecture refute these claims and states these reasons are not convincing.
Firstly, the author states that humpback whales' brains have a high degree of complexity and seem to be intelligent enough to use stars for navigating long distances. In contrast, the speaker claims that there are too many animals such as birds, like ducks which have average intelligent rate but, use this ability to navigate their ways. Moreover, these animals born with this ability and this is not related to intelligence.
Secondly, the reading claims that humpback whales migrate in the straight line which proves that they navigation by stars. Because animals can move in the straight line if they orient themselves by some external objects or forces but, whales migrate in the open ocean which there are not any objects or force. on the contrary, the lecturer disclaims this argument and asserts that biomagnetic field is an aspect which some animals use them to migrate in the straight line, therefore, the humpback whales using this feature and with earth magnetic field find their ways easily and they don't navigate by stars.
Finally, the writer states that humpback whales show some behavior that is known as spy-hopping and it is very common in marine animals. this behavior helps them to look at the stars. the professor in the lecture rebuts this contend and profess that some sharks show this behavior but do not migrate. these sharks use spy-hopping to look for their hunt. Besides, this behavior does during the day which there are not any stars in the sky. Thus this claims is not authentic.
In the nutshell, the professor in the lecture rejects all claims which author use to prove humpback whales using stars for navigation their ways.
