The reading passage proposes some evidence indicating the usage of stars by a kind of whales in navigation for long distance migration. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on proposed statements and offers some counterclaims to refute them all. Moreover, she mentions that despite being facinating at the first glance, the ideas are not convincing.
First, the passage argues that whales’ brains are complex enough to be able to use stars for oriantation. On the contrary, the professor is of the idea that there seem to be no relation between the intelligence or brain’ complexity and the ability of navigating by stars. He also mentions that some animals such as docks have this ability although they have a very complicated level of brain or a distinct intelligence. In fact, this method is an inborn instinct that does not need much of being smart.
Next, the reading mentions that whales just like other animals are capable of staying at the same direction in long distances which makes it possible to believe that whales use stars as landmarks due to absence of terrestrial ones. In contrast, the lecturer highlights the fact that there has to be an extenal force to stay straight and the force is earth’s magnetic field. In addition, he mentions that whales are bio magnetaied meaning that they rely on their sensitivity to the earth’ magnetiity instead of stars.
Finally, the passage brings up the idea that whales are used to maintaining their heads out of the water for minuted which is the sign of looking at the stars. Conversely, the lecturer dismisses the issue due to the fact that other animals which do not even migrate do the same some times; sharks for example, use spy-hopping on their prayes. Furetheremore, he explaines that whales have this habit even during the day that stars are not recognizable.
