Based on the set of materials both the author and the speaker discuss distant migration of humpback whales. The author states three possible reasons that ease this migration while the lecturer casts doubt on these ideas and gives several counterarguments in response.
Initially, the author puts forward the idea that humpback whales' level of intelligence is high enough to use stars to navigate in the ocean. On the contrary, the lecturer rejects this thesis by clarifying that there is no real and evident connection between being smart and this type of navigation as some birds like docks with the average level of intelligence use stars to navigate and this ability is part of their natural living coming from their instinct.
Second, the author posits that like other animals moving straight, humpback whales should have used some external marks to help them maintain in a straight direction. Yet again, the lecturer repudiates this idea as he says there could be another explanation for external clues. Humpback whales have biomagnetic materials in their mind which are sensitive to earth magnetic field. Thus, as we know some animals use earth magnetic field to navigate, humpback whales could use this field to move forward.
The last idea proposed in the reading states that humpback whales' spy-hopping behavior shows they look for stars to find their path. On the other hand, lecturer states although this behavior is rare among animals, others do spy-hopping for various purposes. For example, sharks do this kind of behavior for hunting. Also, we know that humpback whales do spy-hooping during the day while there are no stars in the sky. Therefore, this idea is just a guess.
