The passage and the lecture debate on whether humpback whales can navigate by the stars. The passage points out that the humpback whales are so intelligent that they can do that, at the same time, they migrate in straight lines and sometimes float straight up. However, finding these statements arguable, the lecture casts doubt on the claims and count them weak.
To begin with, according to the passage, it is said that humpback whales use stars to navigate by because they are smart. By contrast, the lecture holds the opinion that there is not real connection between intelligence and the ability to use stars to navigate by. For instance, ducks with average intelligence can use the stars to navigate by. As a consequence, it is an instinct to do that rather than intelligence.
What is more, the passage contends that humpback whales migrate in straight lines with the help of external objects or forces. The lecture, though, dismisses it by saying that it is earth magnetic field rather than stars that navigates the migration. In this case, although humpback whales migrate in straight lines, it has nothing to do with the navigation of stars.
Finally, the passage claims that humpback whales exhibit something unusual which is known as spy-hopping and agrees that they are aimed to look at the stars. On the contrary, the lecture disagrees. The lecture maintains that spy-hopping is not for looking at the stars for the purpose of navigation because this kind of behavior is also found in animals that do not migrate, for instance, sharks. Instead, sharks use it for hunting food. What is more, the behavior of spy-hopping often happens in the daytime when there are not stars at all. As a result, the lecture is not for that.
