In the reading, the author claims that the project of sending humans to Mars would not be practical pointing out 3 problems of support. However, finding all the problems questionable and implausible, the lecturer repudiates the claim and present some solutions for these problems so that the mission would be possible.
At first, the author argues that a round-trip to Mars takes 2 years and supplying food, oxygen and water for this long period of time is impossible. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that astronauts can use hydroponic. Hydroponics is a technique by which astronauts can cultivate their food in water instead of soil and it takes a little space. The hydroponic technique can be used for recycling the waste water and makes it drinkable water. Moreover, owing to the fact that plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, this technique helps astronauts to be provided by a considerable amount of oxygen.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that zero-gravity environment of space has negative consequences such as decrease in muscle mass or lowing bone density, especially if experiencing low gravity last for several months. That being said, the author disputes it by clarifying the fact that scientists have launched several spaceships so for and the astronauts have learned a plethora methods to deal with this problem. For instance, they can do regular exercises during the mission to help their body be in a favorable status. These exercises will increase the concentration of the vitamins in their bones, thus prevent happening the negative effects.
Finally, the author draws attention to exposing to hazardous levels of space radiation as the last problem which makes the Mars mission impossible. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that these radiations are not dangerous all the time and astronauts special equipment to protect themselves in that time. Occasionally radiations would be hazardous for astronauts and during this time, they can use a small shielded area. Due to the small size of it, it does not add a substantial weigh to the spacecraft.
