TPO 50- Integrated writing

Both the reading passage and the lecture focus on the possibility of sending humans to Mars and its problems. Although all the materials presented by the author elaborates his reaching, the speaker provides some evidence to refute them all.

The passage believes that a round-trip to he Mars takes at least two years and the spacecraft has not enough space for food and water for astronauts. In contrast, the lecture explains that there is a new agricultural method that allows astronauts to cultivate plants in water. Therefore, plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen and they can be used as food for astronauts.

In addition, the reading passage claims that being in the zero-gravity environment, the astronauts would have some unhealthy problems such as decreased muscle mass and lower bone density. On the contrary, the lecture mentions that some astronauts that are around the earth for several months have discovered some ways to prevent these problems. They have regular exercises every day to strengthen their muscle mass and supply some minerals such as calcium to prevent low bone density.

Finally, the author holds the view that space radiation emitted by the sun is so dangerous for astronauts and putting a protective shield makes the ship heavier. On the other hand, the speaker elucidates on the fact that these radiations are not dangerous all the time and it can be possible to make a small shield to protect. So whenever astronauts feel danger, they can go to the safe part of the ship.
