TPo23- Integrated Task
The reading and the lecture are both about the reasons of yellow cedars' declination. Whereas the author of the reading states that there are three reasons that cause these trees to decline, the lecturer suggests that those mentioned reasons can not be so effective. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, some insects especially beetles, attacked the tree and use its wood as food, so they can damage the tree. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that yellow cedar trees are more resistant to insects compared to other kinds of trees, as its bark contains powerful chemicals. Therefore, they are unlikely to be damaged by the beetles. Furthermore, he mentions that the beetles attack the trees which were damaged before and were near to death.
Secondly, the reading states that the brown bears which claw the trees to eat its sweet bark can be the reason for declining. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that although bears damaged some trees, there were some trees on the island that have been damaged, where no bears exist. Thus, the bears can not be the reason for declining.
Finally, the reading claims that gradual climate change may result in a root growth pattern change and this weak roots can harm all parts of the tree. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that frost damage is not an effective reason for yellow cedar declination. He thinks that many trees that have been damaged were in the lower elevation that is warmer. Moreover, he feels while many harmed cedar trees were in the lower height with warmer temperature, this reason can not kill the yellow cedar trees.
