TPO3-TASK1

Both the reading passage and the lecturer are discussing whether the Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet was painted by Rembrandt or not. The reading passage state that because of some evidence the painter of it was not Rembrandt. However, the professor casts doubt on the points made in the reading due to some recent examinations showing the portrait is indeed was painted by Rembrandt.

First, considering the article there is an inconsistency in the women's clothing which is opposite to Rembrandt's regard to details of the subject's clothing. In contrast, the professor in the lecture contradicts the idea and further explains that analysis on the painting pigments shows that there was no fur collar in the original painting and it has added to the painting 100 years after the year in which the portrait was made in order to increase its value and to make it like a formal aristocratic woman.

Second, the reading claims that the light and shadow in this portrait are not fitted together. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes the information presented in the article and makes the point that when the over top color is removed, in the original painting the woman has a simple light color cloth illuminating her face and was not thereby in partial shadow.

Third, the author in the passage puts forward the idea that this portrait is painted on several glued pieces of wood panels, while Rembrandt used to paint in a single wood panel. On the other hand, the speaker contradicts the idea and adds that when the over top layer was added upon the pointing, this pieces also were added to enlarge it from sides and top to make it more grand and valuable and the original painting was painted in a single piece of wood panel which was cut from the same three that another Rembrandt's painting panel, self-portrait with a hat, was.
