Carved stone balls are a curious type of artifact found at a number of |locations in Scotland. They date from the late Neolithic period, around 4,000 years ago. They are round in shape; they were carved from several types of stone; most are about 70 mm in diameter; and many are ornamented to some degree. Archaeologists do not agree about their purpose and meaning, but there are several theories.

The reading and lecture are both about stone balls which were found in Scotland. The author of the reading feels that they are the round shape and curved from different types of shape and archaeologists do not consent with the intention and the meaning. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He cast doubts that theories are not convincing.

To begin with, the author argues that the stone balls were used as a weapon. The article mentions that there is a hole in the ball surface which could be used for holding the ball to throw. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that if the stone balls were used for weapons they must be fracture or will be missing some pieces but the ball was not damaged.

Second, the writer suggests that for their uniform size it can be predicted that they might be used for measure unit. He also elaborates by mentioning that it may be used for quantitative measures for grains, food etc. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by stating that the weight of the ball is different because it was made with different material. Additionally, he says if the ball made with sand it weights must be less then the ball made with metal.

Thirdly, the author posits that with this sophisticated design they must be a symbol of social status. In contrast lecturer's position is that through it was from the neolithic period that time people use name symbol as social status and it is proven. He also noted that it could be definitely wrong that they used stone for the community symbol of status.
