TPO44: the silver coin which is founded in US is genuine evidence or the fake one?
Both the reading passage and the lecture are discussing the issue that whether the silver coin discovered in a native American archaeological site is fake. The author of the reading passage contends that it is fake due to three reasons, while the statement of the professor contradicts with it by convincingly pointing out the weaknesses existing in the passage.
First, the author of the article contends that due to the long distance between the site and Norse settlements in Canada, it was impossible for the Norse to arrive at the site. However, the professor rebuts that the Norse traveled great distance to bring objects, hence, they probably used the silver coins to buy some objects back to their settlement place.
What's more, despite of the assertion in the reading passage that no other coins can be found in the site, the professor suggests that since the Norse did not settle there permanently, they were likely to pack up all their silver coins and take them back to Europe, which resulted in the situation that no other coins can be found.
Finally, the author asserts in the article that as experienced explorers, the Norse were capable of predicting that coins were useless in America since native North Americans did not recognize coins as money, whereas the professor harbors the idea that the Norse probably took silver coins for its appeal in beauty, like jewelry. Meanwhile, provided that once they convinced the native Americans to realize the value of coins, they could trade with local residents with coins.
In a nutshell, the professor strongly points out the weaknesses existing in the article and verifies that the silver coins discovered in the archaeology site are genuine evidence for exploring the history of the presence of the Norse.
