Traveling to Mars

Essay topics:

Traveling to Mars

The reading and lecture are both about the possibility of sending humans to Mars. While the writer states that traveling to Mars is sophisticated and require solving pivotal issues, the lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She believes that scientists have proposed solutions for the problems.

First of all, the author claims that round-trip to Mars and back probably takes about two years which is not comparable by going to the moon. Therefore, much more food and oxygen supplies are needed, maybe more than the space ship's cargo capacity. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She asserts that spacemen can use hydroponics. In this case, they can cultivate plants in water instead of soil and produce their food as well as refine the water and air.

The next point brought up is that astronauts are exposed to zero-gravity for months. He mentioned that lack of gravity effects on the human body negatively. However, the professors say that lunching space stations helped the spacemen to learn how to deal with no gravity. She elaborates on this by mentioning that they can do regular exercise or take vitamins to protect their bone's structure.

Finally, the author mentions that the astronauts may expose to high-level of space radiation which is harmful to human. On the other hand, creating a shield that can protect them is going to be so cumbersome. The lecturer puts forth the idea that they are not always in danger and during their travel, some smart instruments can measure the high-level radiation and warn them to stay in the small protected area.
