However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper. It is argued that storing patients’ medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping.

Reducing Costs

First, the use of electronic records can help reduce costs by saving money on storing and transferring medical records. While paper records require a significant amount of storage space, electronic medical records take up virtually no space. Moreover, by having patients’ records computerized in databases, doctors can easily access the records from almost anywhere and can easily duplicate and transfer them when necessary. This costs much less than copying, faxing, or transporting paper records from one location to another.

Preventing Errors

Second, electronic medical records are crucial to reducing the chances of medical errors. Illegible handwriting, improper transcription of data, and nonstandard organization of paper records have caused errors that in some cases have had serious consequences for the patients* health. In contrast, electronic records are associated with standardization of forms and legible computer fonts and thus minimize the possibility of human error

Aiding Research

Third, electronic medical records can greatly aid medical research by making it possible to gather large amounts of data from patient records. It is often impractical, impossible, or prohibitively expensive to manually go through thousands of patients’ paper records housed in doctors’ offices. However, with the existence of electronic medical records, it would be simple to draw out the needed information from the medical databases because the databases are already formatted for data collection. Once in the electronic system, the records could be accessed from any research location.

The article and the lecture are both about the uses of electronic system. The author presents three theories about the benefits of keeping the medical record electronically over the old fashion paper based system. The lecturer disputes the claims made on the article and her position is that, they are incorrect.

According to the reading the implementation of the electronic base system of record keeping will significantly decrease the cost that is related to the storing and the transport of the record files. Unlike the hard copy based system the computerized record system does not take physical space and can be easily assess which result in minimizing the cost associated with copying, faxing and exchange of the record between different subjects. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that even after the electronically recorded the written records from the doctors have to be store for future purposes since it is of vital importance for legal purposes. Additionally she pointed out that due to the fact that the record are to be secured it will still take physically space and will not aid in reducing the cost.

Secondly, the author suggests electronic information based system will significantly reduce and prevent the error significantly which are common in the hardcopy system since they tend to lack organization and proper format. In the article, it is said that such error can be of detrimental for patients however, the use of electronic system will reduce such error. The lecturer, however, asserts that medical records of the patients imputed by the doc in the paper are entered by the medical staff in the record system. She goes on to say that since the record still have to be inputted by the staff there is still high chance of mistakes during the entry of data in the electronic system.

Finally the author posits that the large amount of data from the medical database which are inputted electronic can be easily asses for the research purposes. He contends that unlike in paper based system they don’t have to go through each record to obtain the data manually aiding the research by providing them fast and tailored data as per their requirements. In contrast, the lecturer stance is the access of such record without the permission of the government and patients is a serious breach of privacy law. He noted that, such permission are hardly granted by the patients.
