First, the author argues that using electronic medical records can reduce the cost that doctors are spending. The article mentions that by using electronic medical records doctors will save money on storage, transfer papers, faxing, and copying the records. Moreover, doctors can easily access this kind of record anytime, and from anywhere, and easy to transfer and duplicate them. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that there will not be saving money by using electronic medical records. Additionally, she says that doctors will still use paper-based medical records besides to use electronic medical records for emergency backup and signature for legal use.
Secondly, the writer suggests that by using electronic medical records there will be fewer errors. In the article, it is said that there will be fewer mistakes of improper handwritings, and transcriptions, and not a good organization of papers. so by using electronic medical records with a computer there will be standers font and error correcter. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that there will not be an elimination of errors. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that doctors will still use paper-based medical records to write notes and prescriptions and the front desk will enter everything in the system so still they need to read doctors' writing.
Finally, the author posits that using electronic medical records there will be aiding in medical research. Moreover, the article stated that doctors will be able to gather more information that is related to different patients on time than looking in thousands of patients' papers. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that electronic medical records do not help do medical research. She notes that in the united states the medical records are under strict restrictions and laws. It is difficult to reach medical records especially patients who can block their information from usage except for their treatment and even if doctors want to use patient records they need a lot of permissions.
In conclusion, the lecturer's opinion is opposing the author's opinion.
