Venus

Essay topics:

Venus

The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in the possibility to maintain a permanent human presence pressure on Venus. First of all, the reading says that the atmospheric pressure at Venus' surface is at least 90 times greater than Earth surface, so any spacecraft that land of the surface will be crushed. However, the listening argues that people are actually planing to create floating spacecraft in the atmosphere. It will be 50km above the surface. As we know, the pressure in the atmosphere is lower than the pressure on the surface, so spacecraft getting crash will not be possible to happen anymore.

In addition, the reading suggests that there is no water and oxygen on Venus for people to survive. On the other hand, the listening asserts that even though there is no water and oxygen, researchers find out other method to solve this problem. There is a lot of carbon dioxide and other chemicals contain in Venus' atmosphere, and people can mix these chemicals together to obtain oxygen and water. In other words, if people can produce oxygen and water by themselves, the absence of water and oxygen in Venus will not cause any problem.

Last but not least, the reading implies that there is little sunlight that can reach to the planet's surface, so human could not get electricity for powering machines. However, the listening indicates that the clouds at the high place attitude are not very thick, so light can still reach to the surface. Besides, since the cloud can reflect the light, people can use solar power to absorb both the light from above and below. Therefore, these light can give human enough electricity to power the machines. To say it differently, this hypothesis is not likely to be true because clouds will not block all of the light and people can still receive enough sunlight when the clouds reflect the light.
