w1 Professors benefit from appearing on TV.
The reading and the lecture are both about the professors who attend the tv shows as guests. The author of the reading thinks that a large community including the students, the public, the universities and the professor himself get benefit from these type of tv appearances. But, the lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the article. She believes that no one gets any benefit from these type of activities.
First of all, the author mentions that if a professor appears in a tv show, he can reach a lot of people. He adds that if the professors had published his view in some research paper, only a few people will have access to that. But, appearing on tv will benefit a huge number of people as they can easily watch the shows on tv. As a result, the reputation of the professor as scholar increases. But, the lecturer challenges this point. She argues that these type of tv appearances are not good in a professional standpoint. Because other scholars take this negatively and may not invite that particular professor in important technical conferences and the professor can face problems in managing the fund to do his research.
Secondly, the author contends that universities also get benefits from these tv shows. He further explains that if people see a professor in a tv show from a particular university, they will think that the university has got knowledgeable persons on its faculty list. The author rebuts this point too. She opines that these tv programs waste a lot of time of the professors in many ways. As a result, they can't do their research perfectly and often become unable to do their own business and responsibilities.
Finally, the article says that as most of the common people have no contacts with scholarly people, they get a chance to learn a lot of things from the insightful discussions of the professors from these shows. But, the lecturer, on the other hand, does not agree with this view because she concurs with the view that the authority of the tv shows does not want insightful discussion but they only want the title, which they can use to increase their popularity. As a result, there remains no difference among a scholarly professor and a well prepared tv reporter in these tv shows.
