Essay topics:

whether or not electronic medical records, which doctors store information of patients in electronic databases, outweigh paper forms

Both the passage and the lecture talk about whether or not electronic medical records, which doctors store information of patients in electronic databases, outweigh paper forms. The author of the extract asserts that using electronic form instead of paper forms in medical recording has several advantages and provides three reasons to empower this opinion. In the contrast, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on this assertion and denies each of the reasons brought in the article.
First and foremost, according to the author of the excerpt, such a replacement, using electronic databases instead of paper ones, will reduce the costs because they need anymore to store and transfer records on paper. However, the professor in the lecture refutes this claim by stating that doctors will always use paper forms because some possible emergencies. For instance, in some situation they need patients' signature. She mentions that doctors who adopt electronic databases will keep paper forms too. By seeing this issue, it is not true that this substitution can reduce the costs.

The professor in the lecture further maintains that when we see a doctor use electronic records system, it would not mean that they themselves don't use paper forms. In fact, doctors write information and description on papers, and after that their offices' staffs will record them in electronic versions. This declaration rebuts the writer implication that using electronic records minimize amount of error caused by humans. There are still someones, doctors, that use handwriting and someones, offices' staffs of doctors, who must interpret it to record electronically.

The text lasting insists that when doctors recorded patients' information in electronic databases, it would bring other doctors to access all information their patients' past. Nevertheless, the professor in the lecture opposes this indication by referring to the strict privacy laws in the United States. She says that if doctors wanted to collect data, not only would they follow some procedures, but also they must have patients' permissions. On top of all these, this process will not be guaranteed since some patients block their information due to different purposes.
