Essay topics:

The zebra mussel fishes and their disadvantage for new habitats

The article is about zebra mussel, a kind of fish, which move out from their original habitats. The passage argues that this movement as an invasion which cannot be controlled and makes serious problems; the author provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains this is not a matter of concerning and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the author of the reading states that based on the history of zebra mussel's immigration to new habitats, it would be hard to halt them from spreading. The author provides an example of ships which can help zebra mussel fishes to move across the ocean by attaching themselves to the ships's bottom. However, the professor argues that this problem was in the past because of the lack of knowledge which people had. The professor states that now the ships ballast water are checked and replaced with the ocean water which is not contained zebra mussel.
Second, the article claims that zebra mussel fishes are able to dominate its new environment. The author states that the high reproduction rate of mussel zebra and the lack of predators in their new habitats, help them to increase their population. This idea is challenged by the professor. He asserts that the shortage of predators was in the beginning of zebra mussel invasion and after a while most predators find them as a new foods and begin to prey them. The professor mentions the birds as an example which eat a lot of zebra mussels.
Third, the reading posits that the zebra mussel are a reason of the reducing the whole population of other fishes. The professor, on the other hand, opposes this by providing an explanation of the benefits that zebra mussel can have for their environments. The professor puts forth the reason that zebra mussel can provide their environment with nutrients which is beneficial for planktons and other fishes.
