Zoos and the lecture "not-in-support"
The reading passage highlights the benefits of zoos and gives examples with them. The lecture states that these claims made by the author are unfounded. Highlighting how the treatment of animals is not always humane and healthy, emphasis on entertainment than education, problems related to interbreeding amongst offsprings which works against helping endangered species.
The lecturer states that the author is not completely correct about the state of treatment in zoos. Further adding that zookeepers can be negligent towards taking care of animals. Citing an example about death of red pandas in a zoo due to rat poison, the lecturer points at negligence of zookeepers, who were not present at the site of accident. Hence, zoos can't be guaranteed as places were animals are treated with utmost care.
Furthermore, the lecturer highlights how zoos are still perceived as sites of entertainment than education. Zoos inhabit animals which wouldencourage more visitors to come, has no connection with educating them about these animals. Also, the animals whose knowledge is important to disseminate, as often deprioritized against animals which would attract more crowd. The lecturer also suggest that even though animal education is favored, it gives a wrong message to the visitors that animals can be caged for the sake of spreading a message.
Lastly, the lecturer challenges the example stated in the reading passage which supports that zoos are great places which contribute towards helping endangered species. As the lecturer says, the example given is specific and cannot be applied in general to all other species. As, in zoos interbreeding amongst members of same family occurs and this increases the probability of harmful diseases in the new born members, which is detrimental for the species as whole.
To sum it up, the lecturer wants to convey that the reading passage is not true regarding the zoos as there have been evidence of negligence in the zoos by caretakers, majority of zoos house animals which would attract more public than for the purpose of educating about relevant rare and endangered animals. Additionally, the lecturer also points at the potential problem due to interbreeding amongst family members which occur at zoos, which has negative consequences on the species as it promotes diseases.
