TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task

Both the reading and the lecture discuss the possibility of navigation of Humpback whales by the stars. According to the reading, the author provides three reasons to claim that this whale uses the stars as a navigation leader. The professor, on the contrary, rejects all three reasons by saying that even though they are fascinating evidence, the reasons are not convincing.

Firstly, the author points out that the humpback whales are intelligent and have a more complex brain and also have a cognitive ability that helps them to use the stars for navigation. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on this theory by arguing that there is not an equal relation between intelligent and using the stars as a navigation and provides some examples. He says that there are some birds species like ducks that use the stars for navigation, but their cognitive abilities are only average let alone being high. Therefore, using the stars does not seem to have a connection with the intelligent and this ability in birds are instinct to born with. Finally, it would not be acceptable that humpback whales use the stars for navigation because of their intelligence.

Secondly, the reading asserts that the humpback whales migrate in a straight line and use an external object to be at the same position. The professor, by contrast, opposes this idea by saying that there is another explanation for this behavior and that is earth magnetic field. The humpback whales have a biomagnetite sensor on their brain which is sensitive to earth magnetic field, and they use this feature to be on the straight line. Therefore, having the biomagnetite in their brain suggests to orient them.

Finally, the reading passage contends that humpback whales use spy-hopping and this special behavior is an indicator that they look at stars for navigation. The speaker, nonetheless, totally refutes this explanation by saying that it is very rare for humpback whales to look at sats and also sharks do this behavior not for migration but for finding their preys. Therefore, humpback whales are using this feature to look around for an animal. Moreover, humpback whales also use spy-hopping during daytime when there are not any stars on the sky. Finally, the professor explains that this explanation is a pure explanation and nothing else and refutes the c
