The first histogram illustrates a survey about the statistic between marriage and divorces in the US during the three decades since 1970. The second bar chart shows adult Americans' marital status in the year 1970 and 2000.

Overall, Americans chose to marry more than they divorced throughout the entire survey time, even though the number of marriages decreased significantly. In addition, not only did American preferred getting married than another marital status in 1970 but also as was the case in 2000.

Some 2.5 millions of Americans got married in 1970, then stagnating this figure, so it was clearly 1.5 times larger than they got divorced. Not until in 1980 the figure of marriage declined gradually to 2 million by the end of 2000. However, the number of divorces fluctuated briefly between 1.4 million and 2 million, eventually this figure leveling off at 2 million in 2000.

In addition, about 70% of mature American were in married status, and accordingly, the percentage of this group was far larger than never married(nearly 15%), widowed(less than 10%), and divorced(around 2%) in 1970. However, the proportion of never-married increased to approximately 20%, while the fraction of married dropped by 10%. Also, the ratio of widowed and divorced kept the relatively low level in 1970 and 2000.
