Both the reading passage and lecture discuss whether online encyclopedias better than traditional printed encyclopedias. The former mentions that online encyclopedias has several disadvantages while the latter attacks each of the points mentioned in the text.
Firstly, the text mentions that traditional encyclopedias are written by the experts while online encyclopedias lacks identity. Online encyclopedias contains partial knowledge and can be edited by anyone. However, the lecturer argues that the exact comprehensive document cannot be find anywhere neither in the books nor online. Traditional encyclopedias are the binded books which has some errors from decades and those errors have never been corrected. Whereas Online encyclopedias can be easily edited if there is any incorrect or partial information.
Secondly, the passage mentions that even if the data has been correctly mentioned in traditional encyclopedias still there is a possibilty of hacking and corrupting the data. While, the lecturer contends that online encyclopedias have been protected from malicious activites like hacking or data corruption. The crucial data online has read only access. No one is allowed to edit the crucial data. Morover, the lecturer mentions that there are special editors supported online that monitor the users editing text as well as eliminate malicious data.
Lastly, the passage maintians that traditional encyclopedias add details after the agreement of experts whereas online encyclopedias have detailed information on trivial topics and less information on important topics. While the lecture argues that traditonal documents have limited spaces, so those documents have limited information. There is no space issue for online documents and posses a great diversity of information when it comes to expressing ideas. Thus a lot of space and platform to conatin diversity of ideas are the strongest benefits of online documents.
