The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.
“Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station’s coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.”

The given argument has some serious flaws. The television station might have been gradually losing viewers, and as a result, the local businesses might have cancelled their advertising contracts with the television station. The local businesses might have felt that their advertisements on the television station is not boosting their sales, and hence might have terminated their contracts with the station. The complaints received from viewers might have always been concerned with the station's coverage of weather and local news, in which case the time devoted to these must be higher than its former level.
First, the television station might be losing its popularity. This might be because the number of people who watch television is decreasing, or a new television station might have stolen the thunder. In the former case, the advertisers might have felt that it is not beneficial for them to advertise in a station which is losing its viewership every day, and as a result might have terminated their contracts with the television station. In the latter case, the advertisers might have thought that since another television station is the most popular one right now, then it might be beneficial for them to have contracts with that station; the local businesses might not have enough money to have contracts with both the stations, and might have cancelled their contracts with the mentioned station. The host(s) of the late-night news program might have also changed, which might have lead to decrease in the viewership of that station. The viewership of the major stations for the last two years is required to evaluate the given argument. If the viewership of the mentioned station is decreasing gradually, or if viewership of another station is increasing, then this evidence would seriously weaken the argument.
Second, the local businesses might have terminate their contracts with the station because they might have felt that the efficacy of their advertisements in television station is less. Their advertisements might not be boosting their sales, and this might be the reason for the termination of their contracts. Or, they might have placed advertisements on the internet, and this might have boosted the sales, and the cost might have been lower. So, they might have cancelled their contracts, and might advertise only on the internet.
Finally, the complaints received by the station might have always been related to incresing the time for local and weather news. In this case, the time devoted to them must be increased beyind what was devoted to them earlier.,
