As can be seen from the illustrated pie chart, there were five main destinations of nursing graduates in the UK in 2009. This year experienced almost all new nurses working in the health sector, which is represented by the largest part of the pie chart, at 84%. In contrast, just 8% of recently graduated nurses decided to simultaneously work and study in 2009. The percentage of graduates who continued further study after finishing the nursing course was a quarter as one of working and studying in the same year, at 2%. The proportion of nursing graduates who were unemployed and work at other destinations in the UK in 2009 accounted for 4% and 2% respectively.

A more detailed look at the table reviews data on new nurses working in the health sector. Among them, hospital nurse was the most popular choice in 2009 with 72.9%. The second and third positions went to midwives and community nurse. Other classifications including mental nurse, paramedic, and other jobs were at lower than 5%, which were 0.4%, 1.3%, and 2.7% respectively.

In sum, almost all recently graduated nurses in the UK in 2009 decided to work in the health sector and hospital nurse was the most common occupation.
