Essay topics:

The author of the reading passage proposes three solutions that could help to decrease a number of cases when birds are injured, trying to fly thought glass windows.

The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that none of the solutions will resolve the problem.

In the reading, the author begins with stating that, one-way glasses that are transperant only one direction, could be used. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that from outside these glasses will be looked like mirrors, and birds do not distinguish the picture in mirrors, such as reflection of sky and trees, form the real ones.

Secondly, the author suggests that, as a solution, colorful lines and special design may be added to the surface of the glass. In the article, it is said that there will be possibility for people to see though parts of the glass that are not covered with painted patterns. The lecturer, however, asserts that these parts of windows will be concidered by birds as open holes and open space, and, as a results, they will try to fly though them.

Fianlly, another solution said by the author is using magnetic field to guide birds away. The author makes the point than birds have an ability to feel magnatic field of the Earth and can use it during navigation. The professor in the listening passage refutes the reading in the notion that this mechanism is used by bird only during long distance journeys, such as migration, and that in the cities they use other approaches, such as brithness of the sun.
