Essay topics:

Birds' population will decrease as a result of growth of human population

This material addresses the question of the continuing decline of the number of birds in the United States. The reading passage suggests that this trend will continue in the future. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this information by stating that the populations of birds will not necessarily reduce.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that as a result of expansion of human settlements more and more areas which are birds' habitats will disappear. Moreover, this will inevitably decrease the number of birds. Meanwhile, the professor casts doubt on this and argues that not all of the birds' types will decline, but only some of them. Also, she mentions that nowadays we can see a lot of birds in cities, and we can even here complaints about their increasing trend.
Additionally, the article posits that increasing number of the world's population leads to the increase of agricultural activities inasmuch more food is needed. Consequently, more areas suitable for birds' living will be transformed to agricultural lands and this will lead to the decline of birds’ population. However, the professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details. Namely, she mentions that the increasing demand of food is being satisfied nowadays not by expanding agricultural areas, but through planting modified crops that give more food per unit of land.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that pesticides which are used in agriculture for protecting crops from pests harm birds directly or indirectly. Their increasing usage will lead to the reduction of the number of birds. This goes counter to the information in the listening passage, according to which, genetically new pestresistant crops do not harm birds since they do not need any additional chemicals to be protected from insects.
