Of course, avocados have many health benefits. But none of the points proposed in the reading are convincing.
When it comes to lowering blood pressure, I admit that avocados do help in such sense. Avocados are loaded with a number of fats. Healthy ones indeed. But you see, fats are after all fats. One avocado contains almost 29 grams of fat which is about 300 calories. So, if you eat avocados as much as you please and ignore avocado intakes, avocados are very likely to cause you to gain weight which negates their benefits because extra weight can increase blood pressure.
Secondly, avocados are not actually good for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The truth is that they should avoid eating avocados. Avocados reduce milk production and have even been known to damage the mammary gland. Also, babies’ stomachs are too sensitive to properly digest avocados and their contents.
And lastly, avocados are not cheap and they are not worth changing our meat diet. Let me give you an example. We can buy a pound of apples or grapes or a dozen bananas for the price of one single piece of avocado. And also, growing avocados is very costly since just growing a pound of avocados requires more than gallons of water, which is rather a waste of our natural resources. So, it is a very unreasonable choice set side by side to a meat diet, which requires far less amount of water in comparison.
In the past, eating avocados was not considered to be necessarily beneficial. Being unaware of their beneficial properties, people used them mostly as avocado oil for different purposes. It wasn't until recently that the advantages of consuming avocados were noticed.
First of all, avocados have vital nutrients that help in lowering blood pressure. They contain as many as 20 kinds of vitamins and minerals. To be specific, avocados are rich in phytonutrients and folic acid. These nutrients are known to be beneficial especially in lowering blood pressure.
Secondly, avocados are good for a healthy pregnancy. As mentioned above, they are known to be rich in folic acid. Folic acid does not just lower blood pressure but also reduces the risk of miscarriage and neural tube defects during pregnancy.
Lastly, eating avocados can also save a lot of money. Some vegetarians tend to eat avocados because they taste similar to meat products and seafood. In this sense, people can save money by eating the meat flavored fruit since meat is more expensive than vegetables in general.
