The dinosaurs known as sauropods were the largest animals ever to walk the Earth. One sauropod, the Brachiosaurus or "arm lizard," weighted over 50 tons and was very tall, the equivalent of a three-story building.
In the lecture, the professor talked about Brachiosaurus' habitat. Disputing the passage's arguments that sauropods were terrestrial animals, she cited several pieces of evidence showing that the ancient species may live near water.
First, she said that while the short legs of Brachiosaurus might leave them unable to walk on land, there is fossil evidence showing footprints of Brachiosaurus on the ground. Moreover, some fossil tracks indicate that the youngsters of this colossal animal can lift their two front legs, a feature of land-dwelling creatures. The evidence contradicts the claim in the passage that Brachiosaurus's legs could not support their massive weight and had to rely on water buoyancy.
Second, the professor said Brachiosaurus could easily feed on land plants and thus did not depend on water plants as the passage argued. Anatomically similar to a giraffe, the long neck of the Brachiosaurus may serve as a good tool for it to reach the leaves of tall trees. Even if the weight of the neck hinders it from stretching high, simply consuming the plants with the same height as the dinosaur is enough due to its tall figure. Furthermore, since its neck is quite long, it can span a considerable range and take up much food without moving much.
Third, the professor dismissed the argument in the passage that Brachiosaurus lay submerged in water and used its nostrils to breathe. The feet of Brachiosaurus are unsuitable for wading in the muddy swamp. For an animal to survive in water, it needs to have short and wide legs like those of a hippo. Nonetheless, the legs of the Brachiosaurus are so thin that they may render it difficult to walk in the water.
