The lecturer disputes some of the arguments presented in the reading about Peary expedition to the North Pole. She believes that the arguments are not convincing.
Firstly, the reading posits that the National Geographic Society organized a committee to investigate Peary’s records and equipment used on the trip. However, the lecturer refutes this statement by stating that the committee which was truly set up by the National Geographic Society did not carry out an objective completion on the investigation. Moreover, the committee was composed of Peary’s friends which creates some bias and the investigation only lasted for two days. According to Peary, he admitted that the committee did not ensure a proper surveillance on the expedition.
Secondly, the reading claims that the recent expedition by Avery supports the claim of Peary trip lasting for 37 days. Conversely, the lecturer mentioned that there are some significant differences in Avery’s trips as compared to Peary’s trip. For one thing, she points out Avery did not carry much items on his trip and that his food was dropped on his way by the airplane which is totally different from Peary’s trip. In addition, she stated Avery had clement weather conditions than Peary’s. Ideally, there is no way the differences on both trips can give same result.
Finally, the reading states that the photograph taken by Peary’s makes it possible to calculate the Surfs position in the Sun by measuring the shadows. On the contrary, the lecturer points out that the techniques used by the scientists vary and as a result, the exact position might not be determined. She reiterates that a primitive camera was used to take those photographs and they are faded. Plus, the shadows looked blurred and fainted and cannot be used to calculate the Surfs position in the Sun
